BambiBambi
By Felix Salten This book explores the world of a deer as he travels through the trials of life. If your child is familiar with Bambi the film, they will soon become familiar with the differences between literature and corresponding movies. Although it is indeed a good story, I wouldn't recommend it for your children. In my opinion, this isn't the kind of story that will keep them interested. It begs you to keep reading, in the hope that some joyous climactic event will occur. Milestones do in fact take place in Bambi's life, but the grand culmination is essentially him reflecting back on his own life while seeing a young deer that reminds him of his younger self. This is not the kind of story that will keep your children engaged, and then reaching for the next book. Due to this, I wouldn't recommend this book for your young children. By Arnold Lobel Caldecott Honor This book contains several heart warming Frog and Toad Stories. This is a great book for your children. They will instantly become engaged because of the simplicity of the story and likability of the characters. Some stories have good moral lessons. They contain comedic irony, which all children enjoy, and will most likely be able to relate to their lives. This book contains several classics, and is a must have for your children's library. By Walter Wangerin Jr. This is the story told through animals of a way of life being challenged, their world almost ending, and what it looks like to live in a post-war world. I would not recommend this book for young children. I stumbled across it in the children's section of the library, thinking it was intended for younger ages. This book contains stories of war, overthrowing good powers, disaster, and rape. The content should be seriously examined by parents before they hand this over to their children. Even though it is told with animals, it could stir very real emotions within children, especially if they are understanding some of the deeper meanings conveyed in the text. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book for children. By Fichard and Florence Atwater Newbury Honor Mr. Popper comes into possession of two penguins, which turns into twelve, and turns his life upside down. He must get rid of them, realizing that their real life should be in the wild. This fun book will be a page turner for your children. It has enough pictures to keep them occupied, which makes it a good early chapter book for them to become absorbed in. The length will make them feel accomplished after reading it, as it is about 135 pages. The characters are interesting and engaging, yet simple enough to fully understand. This is a great book for your children. By Olaf Baker Drawings by Stephen Gammell Caldecott Honor A boy leaves his tribe to go find the buffalo, and ends up finding more than he bargained for. In the end, he and the buffalo save his tribe from the evil Indians. To some children, this story will seem bland. Due to the color of pictures, your child must be able to become engaged based almost solely on the words of the story. This story deals with Indians in a far off land, and there isn't much to relate to for most children. The plot of the story isn't always clear, and I feel that most younger children would have trouble reading this and fully comprehending it, while staying interested.
